October is College Month at Lapeer High School, a time that sees current seniors start to formulate more specific plans for what they aspire to do after they walk across the stage next June at Dort Financial Center.
College Month is a national event, and LHS participates through the Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) and the Local College Access Network (LCAN). Different activities are planned this month for all grades, ninth through 12th, focusing on making plans for their postsecondary lives.
All month long, the LHS counselors work with seniors on a slew of tasks on checklists developed by the counseling staff.
"Many people think we only look at traditional four-year colleges," LHS counselor Julie Pecore said. "However, our goal is to make sure our seniors have a plan after high school. We try to educate them regarding good jobs and the education needed to get them.
"We are working on 9-12 planning for postsecondary and are trying to get students to think about their futures all through school. We believe making goals and plans for the future greatly impacts students’ educational experience in high school."
College is any education postsecondary that results in the achievement of certifications, licensures, or degrees that are able to be used across the job market to get a good job and get paid the appropriate rate. These can be earned at traditional universities, community colleges, technical schools, Ed Tech, truck driving school, cosmetology school, apprenticeships for skilled trades, the military, and so much more.
