Go to any number of athletic events here at Lapeer Community Schools and you're bound to see a number of things.
Competitive, driven student-athletes.
Knowledgeable coaches.
Supportive community.
Jillian Sylvia.

And while many athletes simply know the latter as "just Jill," she has been the district's athletic trainer for a little more than two years.
"My favorite part of my job is getting to watch athletes succeed once recovered from an injury," Sylvia said. "Athletic trainers help with primary care, injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.
"On a daily basis, I check in with every sport, evaluate new injuries, check in with previously injured patients, provide treatment options and education on injuries, refer patients to the doctor as needed, tape and wrap, set up water and supplies for each sporting event, and complete administrative tasks such as treatment logs and emailing. I also prepare and provide immediate and emergency care as needed such as wound care, splinting, cardiac events, and heat stroke."
A native of Marysville, Sylvia's background in her field includes experience with clinical rotations at Heritage High School, Shepard High School, Central Michigan University gymnastics, and Northwood University.
After attending St. Clair County Community College for her first year of college, Sylvias transferred to CMU to complete her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training.
"What brought me to Lapeer was the location and atmosphere," she said. "I think the community here is helpful and kind."
Away from work, Sylvia's hobbies include running, video games, and occasionally crocheting.
