Lake Orion 6, Lapeer 4

Lapeer hosted Lake Orion Monday at Fitzpatrick Field. It was the first game for both teams that saw a lot of action.

Lapeer opened play and held onto the ball early, getting some early opportunities, but as play continued, Lake Orion was able to shake off some early season rust and they began punishing Lapeer for turning over the ball.

They hit the post twice, then scored to go up 1-0. Lapeer’s Morgan Wilcox, answered as she won a ball punted from her keeper Madison White, beating defenders down the field for a breakaway goal.

But Lake Orion came right back and scored three more first-half goals. Leigha Kaake cut the lead to two as she was able to finish a ball first won by Evelyn Hall and then Erin King. 4-2 at the half.

In the second half, it was Wilcox again. She took a diagonal pass from Hall and outpaced the Dragons' defense for her second goal. Lake Orion then returned the favor as they won two loose balls in Lapeer’s box.

Soon after, it was Wilcox again, this time she served a ball to an on-rushing Taylor Morris, who headed in Lapeer’s fourth goal to make it 5-4.

Teams exchanged more opportunities to score, but neither had any more success until the last couple minutes of play when Lake Orion scored the final goal.

Lapeer hosts Flushing Thursday at Fitzpatrick Field before going on Spring Break.

Lightning Strike: Lapeer shuts out Flushing 4-0

Despite a relentless downpour at Fitzpatrick Field on Thursday, the Lapeer Lightning remained electric, putting on a dominant 4-0 performance against the Flushing Raiders.

First Half: Constant Pressure

Lapeer set the tone early, pinning Flushing deep and forcing a series of corner kicks. The pressure paid off when Evelyn Hall fired a sharp cross into the box, finding sophomore Taylor Morris, who buried a clinical volley for the 1-0 lead.

Flushing attempted to claw back with a pair of free kicks, but senior keeper Madison White stood firm. Lapeer nearly doubled the lead before the break, rattling both the post and the crossbar.

Second Half: Pulling Away

The second half began as a balanced tug-of-war until Lapeer’s offense exploded:

  • The Second Strike: Following a ball served in by Morgan Wilcox and flicked on by Hall, sophomore Payton Gourley capitalized to make it 2-0.

  • The Breakaway: Wilcox received a clean pass from classmate Ellery Muir, outpaced the Raiders' defense, and slotted home a breakaway goal.

  • The Finisher: Hall capped off her stellar night by drawing a foul 22 yards out and sinking the subsequent free kick into the back of the net.

Defensive Dominance

While the offense provided the fireworks, the back line was a brick wall. Erin King, Maecyn Kress, Averie Schons, and Avery Fidler were flawless in protection, securing the clean sheet for Madison White.

Lapeer girls soccer battles ranked Midland in gritty road contest

MIDLAND, MI – In a physical Wednesday night showdown, the Lapeer High School girls soccer team traveled to face the Midland Chargers, the reigning Saginaw Valley League (SVL) champions and a current top-five ranked program in the state. Despite a dominant start by the hosts, the Lightning mounted a fierce second-half comeback, ultimately falling just short in a 2-1 final.

The first half belonged to the Chargers, who utilized their speed and physicality to pressure the Lapeer backline early. Midland opened the scoring 10 minutes into the match and doubled their lead shortly after to take a 2-0 advantage into the locker room. The margin could have been wider if not for the standout performance of senior goalkeeper Madison White, whose acrobatic saves kept the Lightning within striking distance.

The momentum shifted entirely in the second half as Lapeer took the role of the aggressor. The Lightning pinned the ranked Chargers deep in their own territory, earning a series of free kicks and corner kicks through relentless offensive pressure.

Lapeer’s persistence finally paid off when senior Morgan Wilcox beat two Midland defenders on a solo run. Wilcox fired a powerful strike that rattled off the crossbar, but fellow senior Rachel Bopra was perfectly positioned to bury the rebound, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

While the Lightning continued to create quality scoring chances in the closing minutes, the Midland defense held firm to secure the narrow victory.

Lapeer will look to carry the momentum from their strong second-half performance as they travel to face the Flint Metro Holly Bronchos this Friday.

Lapeer girls soccer dominates Holly in shutout victory

HOLLY, MI – The Lapeer Girls Soccer team delivered a commanding performance on the road Friday, defeating the Holly Bronchos of the Metro League with a decisive 5-0 shutout.

The Lightning struck early when Morgan Wilcox opened the scoring, capitalizing on a well-placed pass from Ellery Muir to beat her defender and find the back of the net. Lapeer maintained the pressure throughout the first half, adding two more goals from set pieces. Rachel Bopra doubled the lead with a clinical free kick, followed shortly by Wilcox’s second goal of the night—also off a free kick—to send the Lightning into halftime with a 3-0 advantage.

The momentum stayed firmly with Lapeer in the second half. Taylor Morris extended the lead by finishing a ball initially won by Erin King, and Payton Gourley capped off the night’s scoring after connecting with Muir for her second assist of the match.

The defensive unit of Averie Schons, Erin King, Avery Fidler, and Maecyn Kress was impenetrable, stifling the Holly attack and securing the clean sheet. Senior goalkeeper Madison White earned her second shutout of the season in the effort.

Lapeer (now looking ahead to Saginaw Valley League play) kicks off conference action this week with two key matchups:

Lapeer dominates Saginaw United in SVL opener

SAGINAW, MI – Lapeer’s varsity girls soccer team made a powerful statement in their Saginaw Valley League (SVL) opener on Monday, defeating Saginaw United 8-0 in a game shortened to 40 minutes via the mercy rule.

The Lightning offense was firing on all cylinders, led by Morgan Wilcox and Rachel Bopra, who each found the back of the net twice. The scoring effort was well-distributed, with Leigha Kaake, Rileigh Nowak, Erin King, and Ellery Muir all contributing goals. Muir was also the primary playmaker for the Lightning, racking up a team-high three assists.

On the defensive end, the backline of Erin King, Avery Fidler, Maecyn Kress, and Avery Schons remained impenetrable. Their disciplined play ensured a quiet night for goalkeeper Madison White, who secured her third shutout of the season.

Lapeer (SVL 1-0) will look to carry this momentum into their next league matchup as they return home to host Davison this Wednesday at the Center for Innovation (CFI) Fitzpatrick Field.
