Lake Orion 6, Lapeer 4

Lapeer hosted Lake Orion Monday at Fitzpatrick Field. It was the first game for both teams that saw a lot of action.

Lapeer opened play and held onto the ball early, getting some early opportunities, but as play continued, Lake Orion was able to shake off some early season rust and they began punishing Lapeer for turning over the ball.

They hit the post twice, then scored to go up 1-0. Lapeer’s Morgan Wilcox, answered as she won a ball punted from her keeper Madison White, beating defenders down the field for a breakaway goal.

But Lake Orion came right back and scored three more first-half goals. Leigha Kaake cut the lead to two as she was able to finish a ball first won by Evelyn Hall and then Erin King. 4-2 at the half.

In the second half, it was Wilcox again. She took a diagonal pass from Hall and outpaced the Dragons' defense for her second goal. Lake Orion then returned the favor as they won two loose balls in Lapeer’s box.

Soon after, it was Wilcox again, this time she served a ball to an on-rushing Taylor Morris, who headed in Lapeer’s fourth goal to make it 5-4.

Teams exchanged more opportunities to score, but neither had any more success until the last couple minutes of play when Lake Orion scored the final goal.

Lapeer hosts Flushing Thursday at Fitzpatrick Field before going on Spring Break.

Lightning Strike: Lapeer shuts out Flushing 4-0

Despite a relentless downpour at Fitzpatrick Field on Thursday, the Lapeer Lightning remained electric, putting on a dominant 4-0 performance against the Flushing Raiders.

First Half: Constant Pressure

Lapeer set the tone early, pinning Flushing deep and forcing a series of corner kicks. The pressure paid off when Evelyn Hall fired a sharp cross into the box, finding sophomore Taylor Morris, who buried a clinical volley for the 1-0 lead.

Flushing attempted to claw back with a pair of free kicks, but senior keeper Madison White stood firm. Lapeer nearly doubled the lead before the break, rattling both the post and the crossbar.

Second Half: Pulling Away

The second half began as a balanced tug-of-war until Lapeer’s offense exploded:

  • The Second Strike: Following a ball served in by Morgan Wilcox and flicked on by Hall, sophomore Payton Gourley capitalized to make it 2-0.

  • The Breakaway: Wilcox received a clean pass from classmate Ellery Muir, outpaced the Raiders' defense, and slotted home a breakaway goal.

  • The Finisher: Hall capped off her stellar night by drawing a foul 22 yards out and sinking the subsequent free kick into the back of the net.

Defensive Dominance

While the offense provided the fireworks, the back line was a brick wall. Erin King, Maecyn Kress, Averie Schons, and Avery Fidler were flawless in protection, securing the clean sheet for Madison White.

Lapeer girls soccer battles ranked Midland in gritty road contest

MIDLAND, MI – In a physical Wednesday night showdown, the Lapeer High School girls soccer team traveled to face the Midland Chargers, the reigning Saginaw Valley League (SVL) champions and a current top-five ranked program in the state. Despite a dominant start by the hosts, the Lightning mounted a fierce second-half comeback, ultimately falling just short in a 2-1 final.

The first half belonged to the Chargers, who utilized their speed and physicality to pressure the Lapeer backline early. Midland opened the scoring 10 minutes into the match and doubled their lead shortly after to take a 2-0 advantage into the locker room. The margin could have been wider if not for the standout performance of senior goalkeeper Madison White, whose acrobatic saves kept the Lightning within striking distance.

The momentum shifted entirely in the second half as Lapeer took the role of the aggressor. The Lightning pinned the ranked Chargers deep in their own territory, earning a series of free kicks and corner kicks through relentless offensive pressure.

Lapeer’s persistence finally paid off when senior Morgan Wilcox beat two Midland defenders on a solo run. Wilcox fired a powerful strike that rattled off the crossbar, but fellow senior Rachel Bopra was perfectly positioned to bury the rebound, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

While the Lightning continued to create quality scoring chances in the closing minutes, the Midland defense held firm to secure the narrow victory.

Lapeer will look to carry the momentum from their strong second-half performance as they travel to face the Flint Metro Holly Bronchos this Friday.

Lapeer returned to the pitch with renewed energy in the second half. Raising their level of competitiveness, they successfully shifted the momentum and manufactured several high-quality scoring opportunities. Defensively, the Bolts were impenetrable. The back line, anchored by Averie Schons, Erin King, Avery Fidler, and Maecyn Kress, stifled the Carman-Ainsworth attack, allowing zero shots on goal.

Starting goalkeeper Madison White had a unique night -- in addition to securing her fourth shutout of the season, she recorded an assist on the game’s final goal.

Lightning strikes early and often in dominant shutout of Swartz Creek

LAPEER, MI – The Lapeer Lightning girls soccer team showed no signs of slowing down Thursday night, delivering a clinical offensive performance to defeat Swartz Creek at Optimist Field.

From the opening whistle, Lapeer established complete control, pinning the Dragons deep in their own territory with a relentless barrage of shots. The breakthrough came 10 minutes in when Ellery Muir delivered a precise corner kick to the far post, finding Taylor Morris for a commanding header to make it 1-0.

The lead doubled shortly after following a sequence of crisp ball movement. A clinical one-touch pass from Rachel Bopra released Evelyn Hall, who outpaced the defense and slotted a composed finish into the net.

Lapeer’s defensive unit proved they were just as dangerous on the attack as the half progressed. With nine minutes remaining, defender Maecyn Kress overlapped down the wing, beat her defender, and found Rachel Bopra, who skillfully converted for the third goal of the night. The Lightning punctuated the half with just nine seconds on the clock, as Morgan Wilcox served a corner to Erin King, who headed it home to send Lapeer into the half  up 4-0.

Lapeer grinds out physical victory over Ovid-Elsie

ELSIE, MI – In a contest defined by physical play and defensive grit, the Lapeer girls varsity soccer team secured a hard-fought 1-0 road victory against the Ovid-Elsie Marauders.

The opening half saw Lapeer control the tempo and possession, though scoring opportunities remained elusive. The Marauders utilized a defensive strategy of packing numbers behind the ball, effectively clogging the lane and sent the game into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.

Following halftime coaching adjustments, Lapeer ramped up the pressure in the second half. As the intensity on the pitch increased, so did the physicality. While Ovid-Elsie’s aggressive play resulted in three yellow cards for violent contact, the Lapeer squad remained composed and disciplined.

The breakthrough finally came with 12 minutes remaining in regulation. Rileigh Nowak found Evelyn Hall, who showcased impressive footwork by beating her defender twice before bending a left-footed strike inside the far post. The stunning goal would prove to be the game-winner.

Lapeer’s defensive unit was the backbone of the victory. The backline of Avery Fidler, Averie Schons, Ryann Tackabury, Erin King, and Maecyn Kress delivered another stellar performance, stifling the Marauder attack. Their efforts helped goalkeeper Madison White secure her seventh shutout of the season.

Lapeer returns home this Friday to host Fenton. The match is scheduled to take place on Optimist Field 10.
