Welcome to a new year! This will be my 33rd. year teaching. I have been teaching at Hadley-Murphy for the past 20 years in the second grade and Kindergarten. My children once were students in this school. Please use this website to find out what is going in your child's room this year. The second page of the site, titled, "Kindergarten Korner" will be a monthly newsletter that will keep you informed about what is going each month. It will have information regarding what is being taught, requests for special materials for your child's activities, as well as any upcoming field trips and special events at school. Please make a copy or request a copy to be sent home with your child.
The children will learn the following in math this year: Recognizing numbers 1-30; counting to 100; patterns; skip counting by 5's and 10's; shapes; telling time on the hour; recognizing a penny, a nickel and a dime and their values; weight and measurement; and solid shapes. Each day we will spend time doing Calendar Math so that the students will have an opportunity to use practical math skills.
The children have gym 2 times per week for 20 minutes. Please be sure they wear their gym shoes to school those days.
Science lessons will cover such topics at seeds, weather, seasons and lighter and heavier objects.
Social Studies topics for Kindergartners will cover knowing their phone number, house number, name of their street, the city and country they live in.
In Language Arts the children will learn to recognize the alphabet, learn letter sounds for them, be able to write both upper and lower case letters in Modern Manuscript, blend sounds to make words, recognize how many syllables are in a word, do rhyming words and poetry, recognize high frequency words, color words, number words to ten, draw and label their pictures using alphabet sounds that match what they drew, move into recognizing sentences and even writing a sentence near the end of the year, recognize that pictures, words, and letter sounds help us to learn to read then applying that skill to their reading.
The children will learn to label pictures and then move into spelling some of the words that they often use..
