Format: 1) author picture and byline (name/grade); 2) article (150 – 200 words);  3) Include a  subject picture;  4) The front page should focus on only 1 hard news story.  The other pages should have 2/3 stories. 5) Print all rough drafts in Word: 12 point Times and double-spaced.

Keep ALL files (drafts, final copy, page layout)  for your page in the correct page folder!

           

Topics: School related  subjects:

A.    Teacher/staff profiles: new teachers/staff, interesting teacher pastimes

B.     Student profiles: outside of school activities, accomplishments, future plans, etc.

C.     School activities: sports teams, clubs, assemblies, field trips, dances, social events, etc

D.    Editorials: A factually based opinion written about a school topic of student concern. ( attendance policy pros/cons, graduation requirements, hall sweeps, dances, etc..)

E.     Events outside of school that West students participate in: jobs, travel, hobbies, bands, shopping trips, etc

F.      School Related Entertainment on latter pages:  puzzles, jokes, unusual facts, anecdotes (humorous, embarrassing, scary, experiences, etc)

 

A few suggestions: clubs (Book club, Robotics, etc.) winter team sports summary, leadership camps, Mr. Wenzel, Mr. Kinzer, etc,  Student Profiles (artists, athletes, musicians, scholars), students’ cars, work, fashions, music, technology, new teachers, awards/scholarships won, trimesters, new state graduation requirements, jazz  band, student bands

In writing news stories, stay with the facts. Don't editorialize.  Include quotes from sources to get opinions in your article. If you have an opinion you'd like to express, then write an editorial.  News stories give the reader the basics:Who, What, Where, When, How, Why. Grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and spelling all count.  Be accurate and careful with your writing.
